BLYTHBURGH CHURCH

LEGEND OF BLACK SHUCK

The legend dates back hundreds if not thousands of years. No one knows for sure where Black Shuck came from but there are plenty of theories and as the years have passed, like all legends, the stories have become more and more elaborate. Hence there are now probably as many variations on the legend as there are varieties of Gin.

A widely reported sighting of Black Shuck was said to have occurred at Blythburgh Church in Suffolk on 4th August 1577. It was a stormy night when a huge dog broke through the doors of Holy Trinity Church to a clap of thunder.  Black Shuck is said to have rampaged up the nave of the church, past the gathered congregation. After causing the church steeple to collapse and killing a man and a boy the fearsome dog escaped leaving scorch marks on the north door that can still be seen today.
